A Petty Argument

——————————

There were rumors spreading in the adventurer’s guild that I was a fraudster.
It’s a little sad.

Elthina knocked on a splendid door and asked for permission to enter the room.
This adventurer’s guild sure has money, I thought to myself.
Following Elthina, I entered the room.

“I’ve brought Yuta with me,” Elthina said.

“Ah, I see.
Sorry to trouble you, Elthina.
Get us some drinks.
Yuta, please sit over there and wait,” said the guild master.

The guild master seemed important.
He was reading documents at his fancy desk and appeared to be very busy.

I sat on the sofa as instructed.
It was soft and comfortable.
I really liked this sofa.
I bet it’s expensive since it’s in the guild master’s room, but I’d love to get one for myself.

The food was delicious, and there were good quality furnishings too.
If I could earn enough money, I could have a pretty good life.
I just needed some entertainment.
There probably weren’t any TVs or video games since there are a lot of wars, and novels or manga would be difficult to come by as well.

But in a way, spirits could do whatever they wanted.
It seemed like they were flying around the guild master’s room playing tag.
They looked like they were having fun.
I watched them lazily play tag for a while until Elthina returned.

“Here you go,” she said, placing the drink in front of me, then stepping back to wait by the door.
I was bored and wanted someone to talk to, but I knew that a new adventurer like me wouldn’t be someone the guild master would chat with.

If I were a top-notch adventurer, I wouldn’t have to wait around like this for the guild master to finish his work.
It’s tough being a newbie.

I smelled the drink that was placed in front of me and recognized it as the scent of tea.
Sylphy had told me about it before, and it was great to finally see it in person.
I made a mental note to add it to my shopping list.

As I took a sip, the aroma of the tea spread throughout my mouth.
It was delicious.
It must have been made from good tea leaves since it was served in the guild master’s room.
Bell flew over and sniffed the tea, saying “It smells nice.
Can I have some?”

…I don’t think anyone will notice if I let Bell try the tea.
I nodded without saying anything as Bell put her mouth to the cup and sipped the tea.
She twisted her face in disgust and flew away, clearly not liking the bitter taste.

Rain was curious about what was going on, but soon lost interest and flew away.
Tamamo also left quietly, not liking the bitter taste either.
I wish I had some sugar to sweeten the tea.

—-

“Yuta, you’ve been waiting for quite a while.
What do you think they’re planning?” Sylphy asked, looking puzzled.
I had been waiting for about thirty minutes now, but was I being kept waiting for too long? In Japan, there’s usually a pretty big difference in status between a company president and an employee, and there wasn’t a set time for our meeting.
I thought this wait was within an acceptable range, but I wasn’t sure what the customs were in this world.

Elthina was also silent, standing by the door.
It was hard to tell what was going on.
Usually, a receptionist would return to their work after showing a visitor to their destination, but was that not the case here?

Were they trying to mess with me? But they had served me tea… and they were now working on the next set of documents.
Should I be angry about this? I already had a bad reputation for being a fraudster, and I had a feeling that if I got angry and left, my reputation would be even worse.

But I had come here because they had said they wanted to talk to me.
If I just sat here and waited, I might be seen as a pushover… I wasn’t sure what to do.

If I didn’t know what to do, then I should ask.
It was a safe option, but I didn’t want to be seen as an aggressive dog, barking at everything.

“Guild Master, if it’s going to take much longer, may I come back another time? I’d appreciate it if we could talk when the timing is better,” I said.

“Hold on, I’ll be done soon,” he replied without even looking in my direction.
Am I the only one who feels like I could use a little more consideration, given that I’ve been kept waiting?

“Okay, understood.”

——

…Hmm, it’s been about forty minutes now.
Is this some kind of harassment, being made to wait and made fun of? It seems normal to me for the guild master to make new adventurers wait for this long, but how much longer until we’re called?

It’s hard to speak softly here.
Eltina is also looking this way… As a spirit magician, I wonder if it’s okay to talk about this? It would be strange to talk about it in town, but maybe it’s okay here.

The voice of a spirit is already rare enough to hear, but I wonder how rare it is to actually talk to them.
Thinking about it is becoming troublesome.
This is a different world, so it’s okay to be a little selfish, right?

For now, let’s wait another twenty minutes.
If it still doesn’t end, I can complain a little.

———–

…Nothing happened and another twenty minutes passed easily.
Let’s try complaining.

“How much longer until we’re called, Guild Master? I’m free to wait, but…”

Oh, he’s looking at me now.
It’s nice to have a reaction.

“Do you not like waiting here?”

If I’m told to wait, I can wait normally, but I feel like in this different world, it’s important to be aware of social norms and appearances.
He said we’d be called soon, but then he started working on another document.
It feels like it’s leaning towards harassment.

(Hey, Sylphy.
If we anger them here, can we escape if we’re attacked?)

“Don’t worry, it’ll be a piece of cake.
Even if we don’t run, I’ll beat them all up for you.”

Oh, Sylphy is so radical.
She has a very sinister smile.
I wonder if she has a short temper because she’s a wind spirit and has a strong curiosity.

“What are you mumbling about?”

Well, Bell and the others are flying around bored too, and it seems like it’ll be easy, so it’s okay to be a little selfish.

“Well, it’s not like I’m extremely dissatisfied or anything.
But when the Guild Master said he wanted to talk to me and I came all the way here, I was made to wait and even though he said it would be soon, it still hasn’t ended.
I’m wondering if the Guild Master is a poor timekeeper or if he’s making fun of me.”

Oh, the veins on the Guild Master’s forehead are showing.
Eltina is also flustered, did I say too much?

“You’ve got some nerve.
But if you pick fights with the wrong people, you’ll die young.”

“Are you saying that you’re going to kill me? Is it okay for someone with a position to make someone wait and then kill them just because they complained? Is that how someone with status should act?”

I feel like my personality has been getting worse lately.
Maybe I’m getting too arrogant with my abilities.
Even if I say I want to live selfishly, if I don’t have some restrictions, it might end up in tragedy.
I need to be careful.

The Guild Master is taking deep breaths.
He stands up roughly and walks towards me with heavy steps.
He throws a leather bag at me when he sits down heavily on the couch in front of me.

“That’s all of Carl’s belongings.
Take it and leave.”

“Thank you.”

I receive the leather bag and store it in my magic bag.

“…”

“So I can go now?”

I waited because he said he wanted to talk, but if all he was going to do was give me money, he could have just thrown it at me and I wouldn’t have had to wait.

“No, there’s still something to discuss.
Why did you pretend to be a spirit magician?”

“I didn’t lie.
I just said I was a spirit mage because I am one,” Yuta said.

“What’s with that hammer? Do spirit mages really use such a thing?” the guild master asked.

“Well, some do, so it can’t be helped,” replied Yuta.

“Besides, I only just learned that spirit mages are disliked here, so why would I bother to lie?” Yuta retorted.

“Then prove it by using your spirit magic,” the guild master challenged with a sneer.

It was confusing because spirits called it spirit magic, but for humans, it was called spirit mage.
And the tone of the challenge was unpleasant, with a mocking expression on his face.

“What do I gain by using it? The guild master seems to dislike spirit mages, and it’s not pleasant for us either,” I replied.

“Hmph.
How insolent.
If you can show me some decent spirit magic, I’ll allow you to join the guild,” the guild master said.

Didn’t they notice when I used wind barrier in yesterday’s duel? I thought he was a capable person, but perhaps he waslooking down on me and didn’t pay attention.

“Guild membership is open to anyone who hasn’t committed any crimes, regardless of whether they are a spirit mage or not.
So, are you saying that you will refuse me membership because I am a spirit mage? If that’s the case, could you please put it in writing and sign it? I’ll have another guild confirm it,” Yuta said.

The guild master fell silent.

“Eltina, is it really okay for this person to be the guild master? I understand why spirit mages are disliked, but is it necessary to exclude them from the guild?” Yuta asked Eltrina, who seemed to be a senior member of the guild.

Oh no, I’m putting her in a really tough spot.
Maybe it was a mistake to get her involved.
But I don’t think I can make any progress talking to the guild master, so I’m sorry to drag you into this.

“The guild master is an excellent person.
Many adventurers in the guild have suffered from accidental misfires or failures caused by spirit mages in the past.
As a result, there has been a gradual exclusion of spirit mages, and hardly anyone who calls themselves a spirit mage is a member of the adventurer’s guild anymore,” Eltina explained.

Yuta was surprised to learn that the reputation of spirit mages was even worse than expected.
It seemed that they were disliked not only in the labyrinth city but also in general.
Yuta glanced at Sylphy, she averted her eyes without saying anything.
Spirit mage, it was a cool name, but was it an unfortunate occupation?

“But I’ve heard that some incredible spirit mages are scouted by the country and are asked to join them, right?” Yuta interjected.

“Since the abilities of spirit mages can be easily evaluated, those who come to the adventurer’s guild are often those who have not been recognized elsewhere,” Eltina continued.

It depended on whether the spirit could hear and obey the spirit mage’s requests.
Indeed, if they demonstrated their abilities, they could be quickly assessed.
The problem was that when the abilities of spirit mages were low, they would cause a lot of trouble for those around them and end up being disliked.

“Yuta, isn’t this a bit of a bad situation? I hadn’t really paid attention to it before, but I feel like the value of spirits has decreased a lot,” Slyphy said.

(What happens if their value decreases?)

“Did you say something?” Eltina asked.

“No, it’s nothing, Eltina-san.
I just let my words slip,” Yuta replied.

“Well, it’s not a big deal, but if you don’t have a contract, the growth of your spirit will be delayed.
That’s okay, but it’s not a good feeling to know that the value of spirits has decreased,” Slyphy said.

So, it’s like feeling uncomfortable when humans underestimate the value of spirits.
Sylphy was unexpectedly proud, wasn’t she? We’ll talk more about that later, but for now, let’s focus on the guild master.

“I understand why spirit mages are disliked, but why are you blaming me? It’s not a good feeling to be kicked out without even checking my abilities.
If you want me to prove my worth, fine, but don’t come at me with a hostile attitude from the start,” Yuta firmly said.

“That’s why I’m telling you to show your strength.
Just stop whining and do it,” the guild master said.

“It’s because you’re being petty and harassing me that I’m getting irritated, you idiot.
You want me to show my strength? Fine, I’ll do it,” Yuta replied.

Oh no.
I couldn’t help but retort.
What should I do now? If I had just shown Sylphy’s strength obediently, I could have restored our reputation normally…
