(POV Chiharu)

November had arrived, and with it came an intense cold that seemed to seep into every corner.
In the morning, Chiaki and Chinatsu were gradually having a harder time getting up.

Today was a holiday, so maybe they didn’t need to wake up so early.
But as their Onee-chan, I wanted them to lead a healthy lifestyle, so I had to wake them up.
That was my duty.

“Snore, Snore.”

“Zzz, zzz.”

Guh, they’re so cute.
Waking up such angels feels like committing a major sin.
But I had to fulfill my duties as their older sister here…

I gently shook the two sleeping figures to chase away their drowsiness.

“Wake up, both of you.
It’s already 10 o’clock.”

“Ugh… It’s cold outside… Not now.”

“I’m the same… Not now.”

To be honest, I could watch them forever without a single complaint, but maintaining a sense of daily routine was crucial.
I peeled back the layers of blankets, including two additional ones, and tucked them away neatly.

“It’s so cold.”

“Onee…”

“I’m sorry.
But we have to get up, or we won’t be able to sleep tonight.”

While shivering from the cold, the two of them made their way downstairs.
I folded the futons they had used, neatly arranging them in thirds.
Afterward, I returned downstairs to the living room.
Stepping out of the room, I felt the chill of the hallway.

I was wearing socks, but the floor was really cold.
Thoughts of longing for the warmth of the kotatsu filled my mind, a reminder that winter had truly set in.

 (POV Chiharu)

The three of my sisters stared intently at Onii-san.
While he noticed their gaze, he didn’t pay much attention and continued with his task.
He was just knitting, twirling the pure white yarn in his hands.

Onii-san had an impressive level of concentration and the ability to control himself effortlessly.
Not to mention his knitting skills, which always left us in awe.
We often wondered what kind of life he had led until now.
But we didn’t know, since Onii-san remained silent about it.

However, the same could be said about ourselves.

Even now, we still didn’t know each other’s past… That’s right.

“Alright, it’s done.
A handmade scarf.”

“Wow, that’s amazing, Kaito!”

“Kaito-san, you’re really talented.”

The finished product was a beautifully crafted white knitted scarf.
It looked so well-made that one could mistake it for a store-bought item.
It would surely keep you warm once wrapped around your neck.

“Knitting can be quite taxing on the shoulders…”

Onii-san rubbed his shoulders, revealing the strain caused by creating a hand-knitted scarf.

“Oh, Kaito-sa….”

“Kaito! Let me massage your shoulders!”

An interruption ensued.
Chiaki barged in Chifuyu’s moment.
Chifuyu squinted her eyes and held her head in exasperation.
Chiaki had a knack for interrupting like this, so it couldn’t be helped.

It was a bit pitiful for Chifuyu… but I couldn’t say anything at this moment.
Offering excessive assistance to Chifuyu would blatantly expose her feelings for Onii-san.
If Chifuyu wished to keep it hidden and achieve her own fulfillment, then it was crucial for me to watch over her from a distance.

“Thanks, Chiaki.”

“You’re welcome, Kaito.”

Time seemed to stretch out, and a gentle atmosphere filled the room.
I couldn’t help but envy Onii-san.
How did he manage to score enough points for Chiaki’s massage? Onii-san, could it be that you were a hero in your previous life?!

I wanted to press him with these questions.

Now then, as the soothing atmosphere came to an end with the conclusion of Chiaki’s massage, Chiaki’s gaze fell upon the scarf in Onii-san’s hands.
It was evident in her eyes that she wanted it.

Well, it was easy to predict that Onii-san had made it for someone, someone among us.

“Kaito, who are you giving that to?”

“Huh? Oh, I made it with the intention of giving it to someone among you, Chiaki.
Just so you know, I’ll make sure to create one for everyone.”

“Wow! Thank you!”

“But, for now…”

“Me! That scarf is white, and my hair color is silver-white! A white scarf and I are a perfect match like a rabbit and a dragon!”

“I see… Then, this one is for Chiaki.”

“Yay!”

As expected, one could say.
In the end, Chiaki was the first one to receive the scarf.
It was a privilege of being good at asking for things.
But really, rabbits and dragons have perfect compatibility? Is it some kind of inside joke that only Chiaki understands?

Chiaki promptly wrapped it around her neck to show it off.

“How does it look?”

“It suits you.”

“Really? From now on, I’ll use this whenever I go out!”

“Please do, I’d be happy if you did.”

Chinatsu and Chifuyu looked envious.

“What colors would be good for the three of you?” Onii-san asked.

“Well, I think yellow would be good for me!” Chinatsu said.

“Chifuyu finds black to be nice…”

“And Chiharu?”

“For me… pink, I suppose.”

“Alright, just wait a moment…”

Onii-san once again silently tangled the yarn around his fingers and continued knitting the scarves.
His speed was incredible.
One could almost call him a craftsman.

Kaito-san is really good at feminine things… It’s making me lose confidence… Chinatsu murmured softly, Chifuyu glanced at him from the corner of his eye, and Chiaki watched Onii-san knitting intently.

And so, the scarves for everyone were completed!

“Wow, it feels so warm… It’s so good,” Chinatsu said

“Chinatsu, it suits you best after Chiharu, Chifuyu, and me,” Chiaki remarked.

“Yeah, thank you… Wait, are you saying It suits me the least among us sisters!?”

“Thank you, Kaito-san.
I’ll cherish this and use it carefully.”

“I’d be grateful if you say that… Well then, since we have the chance, shall we go somewhere?”

“Oh, yes! I agree!”

“Great, then get in the car for me.”

It’s unusual for Onii-san not to mention the destination and just head out… That thought suddenly crossed my mind.
I also became curious about the apologetic expression on his face…

Onii-san drove the car as we got in.
His face trembled with sadness.
It seemed like he was regretting something, questioning how it had come to this.
And then…

“Kaito? This is a hospital, you know?”

“Kaito-san, aren’t we supposed to go to the supermarket or something?”

Chinatsu and Chiaki asked that.
Chifuyu tilted her head, looking puzzled.
Onii-san held his head, wondering how it had come to this.

“Kaito, are you feeling unwell?”

“Kaito-san?”

“Kaito-san, are you alright?”

“Onii-san…?”

“I’m sorry… I meant to say it, I was planning to tell you a week ago… I’m sorry… Today… is the day for the flu vaccination…”

We all felt our feet firmly give way… The injection… That was the only thing…

Ghosts, bugs, injections—things that all four of us hated in common… Those words crossed everyone’s minds.

“I’m sorry.
But there’s no other choice.” Onii-san said.

“No way! Kaito is a liar! I absolutely won’t go!” Chiaki said.

“Me too! I refuse, no matter what!” Chinatsu added.

“Both of you… I’ll buy you snacks or ice cream on the way back… And if you get the shot, you’ll also get a frog sticker… Maybe you don’t need that, indeed… Well, I guess…”

“Chifuyu will go! It’s because Kaito-san is worried about our health!” Chifuyu said.

“Chifuyu…”

“I’ll go too…” I said.

Protecting ourselves from the epidemic was the most important thing.
And for that, we needed vaccinations.
If my sisters were reluctant to get vaccinated, as their older sister, I had to show them that I was willing to go first!

“Chiharu…”

“…Well then, I’ll go too…” Chiaki said.

“Eeeh, everyone will… Well, we can’t just not go, can we…” Chinatsu added.

“I’m sorry.”

It felt as if heavy shackles, like those of a prisoner, were weighing down on my feet, making it difficult to move toward the hospital…

◆◆

(POV Chiharu)

“Sniffle… Since I was deceived by Kaito, I’m going to eat a Big Mac.” Chiaki said.

“Sob… Since I was kept in the dark about getting an injection by Kaito-san, I’m going to eat a Teritama Burger.” Chinatsu said.

“Oh, sorry.
Look, have some chicken nuggets and fries too.” Onii-san said.

After receiving our vaccinations, we were rewarded with indulgent treats from the fast-food restaurant.
Chiaki got the Big Mac set, Chinatsu got the Teritama set, and Chifuyu got a McShake and fries.

On the spots where we were injected, heart-shaped stickers were applied, and there was still a lingering sting.
However, none of us felt angry or blamed anyone because we knew that Onii-san acted with our best interests in mind.

But I can’t help but feel a little selfish since I did my best, thinking that maybe I can make a small request.
Besides, we also received scarves… Perhaps these scarves were made to keep us in good spirits.
Onii-san often displays this calculated thoughtfulness.

We enjoyed eating fries and drinking tea, temporarily forgetting the fear we had of the injection.

◆◆

(POV Chifuyu)

It happened so suddenly.

I didn’t pay much attention to it at first.

But somehow, I found myself chasing after you.

Desiring to be by your side.

Wishing to hear you say you like me, trying to get to know you.
But you never really open up to me.

I want to bridge the gap between us, but it seems impossible.
I want to touch you more, hold your hand, but it’s out of reach.
It’s frustrating, yet I love these bittersweet days.
I want to embrace you, passionate and fiery as you are.

Oh no! I’ve ended up writing such poetic things!

Ahhhh! It’s embarrassing! What is this!?

Because Kaito-san seems so focused on Aki-nee, I got a little annoyed and unintentionally wrote these things in my diary… What should I do… For now, I should just erase this…

No, but if I did it would feel like denying these feelings of mine.
I should hide them somewhere.
If Natsu-nee and Aki-nee were to see this…

“Oh my, oh my, Fuyu, you’ve written such a poetic thing… How adorable.” (Imaginary Chinatsu)

“Well, well… It’s making my heart flutter too.” (Imaginary Chiaki)

Teasing! Lots of teasing… I have to hide this.

“Hey, Fuyu.
It’s time for dinner… What are you up to?” Natsu-nee asked.

Quickly, I hid the diary within my stomach.

“Oh, nothing in particular.
It’s nothing.”

“Hmm, well, it’s snack time for now.”

“Y-Yeah.”

While keeping it hidden, I went downstairs.
What should I do with this?

“Hey, does your stomach hurt?”

“Huh?”

“You’re holding your stomach, is everything okay?”

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine.”

“I see… I think we have some digestive medicine, so let me know if anything happens.
Don’t force yourself to eat dinner if you’re not feeling well.
If that happens, I’ll have your portion.”

“Your last remark completely overshadowed your initial concern.”

“Just kidding in the second part.”

Natsu-nee was very worried about me.
It makes me happy, but… that’s not my priority right now.
I quickly retreated to the living room and slipped under the kotatsu.
The diary was still hidden within my stomach.

“Chifuyu? What’s wrong? Does your stomach hurt?”

“I’m fine, Aki-nee.”

“I see.
If something happens, we have digestive medicine.
And if you’re not eating, I’ll have your portion.”

“Yeah, I’ll eat, so please don’t worry.”

Both Natsu-nee and Aki-nee really loved the side dishes Kaito-san made.
Chifuyu loved them too.

Seizing the opportunity, I hid the diary inside the kotatsu.
We all had dinner together, watched TV, and enjoyed each other’s company… We laughed and had conversations, but I couldn’t seem to focus on anything they were saying.
My mind was consumed by thoughts of the diary.

“Oh, the bath is ready,” Natsu-nee said.

“Chinatsu and the others can go first!”

“Ooooh, we’ll go ahead!”

“Onii-san, we’ll go ahead,”

If I were to undress for the bath, the diary will surely be exposed.
So, Chifuyu thinks it’s best to leave it inside the kotatsu.
Chifuyu left the diary and said a few words to Kaito-san before heading to the dressing room.

“It’s getting really cold, huh.” Natsu-nee remarked.

“Yeah, I expect Kaito’s car windows to start freezing soon.” Aki-nee said.

“That’s true.
He should definitely put some sort of cover on the seats.” Natsu-nee added.

While listening to their conversation, I started undressing, but none of it registered in my mind.
Occasionally, Haru-nee would glance at Chifuyu, but I couldn’t spare any attention to that.

Even while washing my body and hair in the bath, I couldn’t calm down.
If Kaito-san were to see that… I would be too embarrassed to ever make eye contact again.
It’s already embarrassing enough to face him now…

“Chifuyu will get out now!”

“Huh? No way, Fuyu, the queen of long baths, why?” Natsu-nee asked.

“Chifuyu, you’re obviously eyeing that last crunchy ice cream bar!” Aki-nee said.

“Hey, that’s not fair.
It’s mine.” Natsu-nee said.

“No, it’s mine.
I kept it to eat after my bath.” Aki-nee added.

Ignoring their argument, I got out of the bath.
I really wanted to soak in for another twenty minutes, up to my shoulders… but there’s no helping it.

I hurriedly got dressed and opened the door, heading towards the living room.
And there… Kaito-san was there, holding my diary.

“Ah, K-Kaito-san!”

“You’re getting out early today, Chifuyu.
Is something wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”

“Um, more importantly, that diary!”

“Oh, is this yours, Chifuyu? I found it in the kotatsu…”

“Did you look at it…”

“I haven’t looked inside.
Honestly.”

Kaito-san’s gentlemanly gesture saved the day.
That was close, really close.
Chifuyu reached out her hand to receive the diary from Kaito-san.
He also extended his hand, and the diary passed into Chifuyu’s grasp.
However, due to the rushed and unstable movement, I ended up dropping the diary.

And there it was, a page that depicted my poetic thoughts, open on the floor.
Kaito-san couldn’t help but take a good look at it.

“…”

“Oh, oh no! Th-this, um…”

“Sorry, I couldn’t help but look.”

“Uh, this is…”

It was incredibly embarrassing.
Chifuyu felt a deep sense of sadness, convinced that I must have appeared as a painfully awkward girl.

“Well, um, I don’t know if I should give my opinion or anything… but I like it? I mean, this kind of style.”

“Y-You like it?”

“I do.
It’s like… it reminds me of my past youth, you know? Being able to capture such innocent emotions as they are.
There are various feelings mixed in, but well, I like it.
That’s how I feel.”

“….
I-Is that so…”

Somehow, a different kind of embarrassment began to creep in.
H-He likes it… But well, it’s Chifuyu’s poem that is liked…

“Sorry.
It must have been embarrassing for you that I looked.” Kaito-san said.

“N-No, I’m happy that you said you liked it! In fact, thank you very much!”

“…I see.
Well, that’s good then,”

“…Could you, um, look at it again? I’d like to hear your thoughts, Kaito-san.”

“Oh, definitely! Show it to me again.
I’m enjoying the nostalgic feeling I get from it.

“Then, I’ll ask for your thoughts later, if you don’t mind.”

“Understood.”

It was amazing how things turned out, even though the situation was chaotic.
Kaito-san said he would look at it again, and it was nice to have another topic to discuss.
However, I couldn’t help but worry a bit since he has been so preoccupied with promises like this before, especially with Aki-nee

“It’s a promise then.” I asked.

“Yeah, it’s a pro max.”

“…”

“Ah, it was a boring joke after all… Yeah, it’s a promise, I promise you.”

“Thank you.”

Kaito-san is perfect in every aspect except for his last name (Kuro/Black) and sense of humor.
But even those aspects are cute, so I might actually like them… It’s cute when someone has a little quirkiness instead of being perfect in every way.

That’s how Chifuyu felt…

“My ice cream!”

“No, it’s mine!”

I wanted to continue the conversation a bit longer, but then Natsu-nee and Aki-nee came in, both aiming for the ice cream.
And even though Haru-nee didn’t want the ice cream, she returned to the living room with them.
It seemed like this was the end of our time together for today.

“Kaito! This ice cream is mine, right!?”

“It’s mine, right!?”

“Well, let’s decide with a game of rock-paper-scissors.”

As expected, things turned out like this when Aki-nee and Natsu-nee appeared.
He just couldn’t focus on Chifuyu alone.
He didn’t pay attention to Chifuyu alone.

It was a little bit sad.

But if Chifuyu could finish bathing earlier than everyone else, I could talk to Kaito-san… Maybe I should try to be the first one to finish bathing next time…
